NEC Ensures Business Continuity with EXPRESSCLUSTER X

KATHMANDU, 14 September 2010NEC Asia Pacific (NEC APAC), a leading IT and network solutions provider and systems integrator based in Singapore, and a wholly owned subsidiary of NEC Corporation (HQ: Japan), is launching a new software solution – EXPRESSCLUSTER X 3.0 Series that enables a non-disruptive failover[1] for virtualization systems, aimed at ensuring business continuity in the event of planned and unplanned disruptions, at Radisson Hotel in Kathmandu today.

With unpredictable natural disasters recurring especially in Asia and increasing security threats such as acts of terrorism, ensuring business continuity in the business environment has become even more crucial in the highly computerized business world today.

Backed by more than 10 years of proven innovation in mission-critical system protection and recovery, EXPRESSCLUSTER X is an integrated High Availability (HA) clustering software that offers functionality and reliability designed to ensure continuity of business critical systems with fast recovery of application and data within minutes, to minimize disruption of essential business processes.

EXPRESSCLUSTER X provides simple and cost effective solutions for unplanned downtime mitigation against hardware, software, and site failures and planned downtime mitigation against periodic hardware and software maintenance tasks that require system restart. Combined with NEC’s Fault-tolerant (FT) servers, NEC aims to bring about a complete business continuity solution to customers in this region.

EXPRESSCLUSTER X is the core of NEC’s EXPRESSCLUSTER product line, which holds top share[2] in the Asia Pacific region’s high availability software market. This software enables the provision of highly reliable, low cost systems by observing system operations, detecting failures and automatically transferring operations to a standby server that continues to carry out application workloads.

This EXPRESSCLUSTER X 3.0 Series newly supports non-disruptive failover for virtual machines[3] through reinforced linking functions with virtualization software. Moreover, the time required to initially synchronize data between the active server and the standby server has been significantly reduced, in addition to usability improvements in the graphical user interface (GUI).

The software’s main features are as follows:

(1) Supports Non-disruptive Failover for Virtualization Systems

Non-disruptive failover for virtual machines is made possible through coordination with virtualization software. Operations can quickly resume in the event of a failure thanks to the new EXPRESSCLUSTER software, which enables application workloads on virtual machines to restart activity in the same position as just prior to a failure.

(2) Accelerated Data Synchronization

Data synchronization has been significantly accelerated between active servers and standby servers during both a system’s initial implementation and its recovery from a failure. This new function, which synchronizes only the actual data on a disk, can complete synchronization of a 1000 GB disk in approximately 10 minutes[4] from initial implementation. Existing technologies require approximately 1,000 minutes to carry out the same task.

(3) Improved Management Interface

In terms of settings, selections automatically appear on screen following the input of a minimum amount of information by the user, which enables settings to be easily selected during the system’s initial implementation. Furthermore, the management screen’s graphic user interface (GUI) has been improved for greater usability.

Mr David Ooi, Regional Director of Server Hub at NEC Asia Pacific, says, “The objective of a disaster recovery plan is to enable an organization to survive a computer room disaster and to re-establish normal business operations within minutes. Companies who have a local or regional presence in Asia, a region with varying degrees of economic development and geographical challenges, often face disruption due to natural disasters, planned or unplanned community interruptions. As such, they will find such disaster recovery solutions very useful and able to resume their critical operations within a reasonable timeframe, should one or more of their sites fail to operate.”
